Original parts vs spare parts (according to https://www.autoport-koeln.de)
In the case of spare parts for motor vehicles, a distinction is primarily made between so-called original parts and identical parts. On the one hand, one divides between the spare parts that bear the trademark of a major car manufacturer, such as Mercedes, VW or Opel.
On the other hand, there are the spare parts with the logo of well-known parts manufacturers, such as Bosch, ATE or Hella. Original parts from the vehicle manufacturer, also known as original equipment parts or OE parts for short, are thus contrasted with aftermarket parts, which are also simply referred to as spare parts.
You can also recognize the original parts of the car manufacturer by an original part number (OE part number). All parts are the same as those used in the assembly of vehicles at the manufacturer’s factory.
In addition, there are spare parts with the logos of manufacturers on the package, which are not produced by VW & Co. They come from the workshops of independent parts manufacturers, such as LUK or Sachs.
They produce for the carmakers, are suppliers and are also called original equipment manufacturers. Such OEMs often manufacture not only exclusively for vehicle producers. They also sell their spare parts under their own name, even with their own part number.
You can buy the parts on the open market. Independent workshops prefer to use them for repairs. Since they are simply sold under the supplier’s name, but are otherwise identical in quality to original parts, they are known in the trade as identical parts.
