Exhaust gas recirculation
The combustion of fuel produces pollutants. Exhaust gas recirculation is a method of reducing pollutant emissions.
EGR valve
The EGR valve has the task of metering the amount of recirculated exhaust gas. It is attached to either the exhaust manifold or the intake manifold. In some engines, it sits in a heat-resistant exhaust line that connects the exhaust manifold to the intake tract.
EGR valves in diesel vehicles have large opening cross sections due to the high recirculation rates.
In gasoline engines, on the other hand, the cross sections are significantly smaller. Pneumatic and electromotive EGR valves are used in passenger car applications:
Pneumatic EGR valves are actuated with negative pressure via electromagnetic valves. Here, the vacuum for actuation is tapped from the intake manifold or generated by a vacuum pump.
Electric or electromotive EGR valves are actuated directly by the control unit. You do not need a vacuum and a solenoid valve.
EGR lines are available in flexible or rigid versions. They connect all components of the exhaust gas recirculation system: from the exhaust gas extraction point to the EGR cooler, the EGR valve and the intake area. Due to tight space conditions in the engine compartment, complicated connecting paths are often required.
