Brake disc

Together with the brake pads, the brake disc ensures that the braking energy is converted into thermal energy through friction. In this way, the vehicle speed can be regulated by the driver.

The brake disc is an important component of the braking system. In order for this to brake the vehicle safely and comfortably at all times, the brake disc and brake pads must generate a braking torque (a braking force).

This braking torque is transmitted to the wheel hub and from there to the rim. During the braking process, the kinetic energy of the vehicle is converted into thermal energy by friction between the brake pads and the brake disc.

There are different brake discs that serve to regulate heat.

Ventilated brake discs

When driving downhill, the friction ring can reach temperatures of up to 700 °C (red heat). Ventilated brake discs are often used to cool the front axle in particular. These have a much larger surface area, which is more suitable for heat exchange.

This allows the heat to be dissipated into the environment more quickly than with solid brake discs. The friction rings of the ventilated brake disc are connected to each other by webs in the form of ribs or domes.

Due to the fact that the brake disc rotates, an air suction develops. This sucks the air from inside the brake disc through the ventilation duct to the outside.

Perforated/grooved brake discs

Perforated or grooved brake discs have an even better cooling effect. They also have the advantage of being less sensitive to wet conditions, but they are more expensive and may produce more noise during braking.
